First Ghana SDA Church - Renovation
Revitalizing the faith of a community through a new church.
The First Ghana SDA church sought a new church building that would embody the essence of reform, revitalize the community and become a haven for the youth. Owusu-Agyei Group met these challenges by seeking to illustrate the relationship the church played in the community, how it integrated into the existing urban fabric and how it is perceived from the neighboring park. It was pertinent to generate a proposal that reimagined the historical and traditional views of a church in a modern context. In the end, the church could no longer be viewed as a place only for worship; rather, it became layers of porous shells that invites and allows people to transition seamlessly from the street into the church, beginning at the loggia.

As seen from the neighboring park, the facade of the building functions as layers of porous shells that allow people to move into the compounds of the church without entering the church. Thus, creating an inside-outside relationship

Churches are often adorned with paintings that tell the story of the prominent characters in the bible. These paintings usually are in color and introduces a different language. Using this idea as a precedent, we created a sanctuary by producing reliefs that reveal an image when light is shone upon them.

The facade of the building functions as layers of porous shells.
The articulation embedded in the façade creates an inside-outside relationship. The first layer is the loggia/arcade, which provides a buffer zone for people to hang out outside of the church. For maximum transparency, the lobby is treated with a grid storefront system thus allowing people to see into the space. The second layer is the lobby. Our vision at Owusu-Agyei Group was to create a space that would engage the community. To do this, we introduced a gallery so that the lobby would serve as multi-purpose space for the community and church members alike.
